Celexa (Cipramil) additional information
Celexa common uses
Celexa (Cipramil) is used to treat the symptoms of depression. Celexa, with its active ingredient citalopram, works by allowing nerves to communicate longer with each other through the presence of serotonin. Celexa inhibits the reuptake of serotonin from the area between nerves (synapses).
Celexa directions
Celexa comes as a tablet containing 20 mg. citalopram, to take by mouth once daily, morning or evening with or without food.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered if it is within an hour or so. If you do not remember until later, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Celexa precautions
Individuals with kidney or liver disorders should consult with a physician before beginning treatment with Celexa.
Individuals who are currently taking or have stopped within the last 14 days taking MAO inhibitors, should not begin treatment with Celexa.
It is not recommended to use Celexa and NSAID´s, aspirin or other drugs that affect coagulation in combination, since it may interfere with serotonin reuptake and there may be an incresed risk of bleeding.
Tell your doctor if you plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding an infant. Citalopram is excreted in human breast milk. The decision whether to continue or discontinue either nursing or Celexa therapy should take into account the risk of citalopram exposure for the infant and the benefits of Celexa treatment for the mother.
Celexa may take 1 to 4 weeks to reach effective levels in your body. Alcohol intake should be limited because alcohol is a depressant and in combination with Celexa may increase drowsiness and fatigue.
Celexa possible side effects
The most common side effects of Celexa include effects on sleep and eating habits. Some individuals are made drowsy while others experience insomnia. Some individuals have an increased appetite while others have a decreased appetite. In clinical trials, these side effects were mild and decreased as the patient continues treatment. Talk to your physician if these side effects are bothersome.
Celexa overdose
If overdose of Celexa is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Celexa additional information
