Xenical (Orlistat) additional information
Xenical, common usesXenical contains the active ingredient orlistat, for oral administration. Each Xenical capsule contains 120 mg. orlistat.Xenical is indicated for obesity management including weight loss and weight maintenance when used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet. Xenical is also indicated to reduce the risk for weight regain after prior weight loss.
Xenical, directionsTake Xenical by mouth, generally three times daily during (or up to one hour after) each main meal that contains fat. The daily intake of fat, protein and carbohydrate should be evenly spread over three main meals. If a meal is occasionally missed or contains no fat, skip that dose of Xenical. Because Xenical can interfere with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (e.g., A,D,E,K), a daily multivitamin supplement containing these nutrients is recommended. Take the multivitamin at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after Xenical (e.g., at bedtime). The effects of Xenical may begin as soon as 1-2 days after treatment begins; noticeable weight loss will take longer.If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered if it is within an hour or so. If you do not remember until later, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Xenical, precautionsGastrointestinal events may increase when Xenical is taken with a diet high in fat (>30% total daily calories from fat).There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of Xenical in pregnant women. Xenical is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It is not known if orlistat is secreted in human milk. Therefore, Xenical should not be taken by nursing women. The safety and efficacy of Xenical in pediatric patients have not been established. Some individuals may develop increased levels of urinary oxalate following treatment with Xenical. Caution should be exercised while using Xenical by individuals with a history of hyperoxaluria or calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis. Weight-loss induction by Xenical may be accompanied by improved metabolic control in diabetics, which might require a reduction in dose of oral hypoglycemic medication or insulin.
Xenical, possible side effectsXenical may cause some side effects that are usually mild to moderate and decrease after the first week of the treatment. The most common side effects are fatty/oily stool, oily spotting, intestinal gas with discharge, bowel movement urgency, poor bowel control, or headaches may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Intestinal side effects (e.g., oily stool) may increase in intensity if you exceed your daily dietary fat allowance. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Xenical, overdoseShould a significant overdose of Xenical occur, it is recommended that the individual be observed for 24 hours. Systemic effects attributable to the lipase-inhibiting properties of orlistat should be rapidly reversible.
Xenical, additional informationKeep Xenical in a tightly closed container and out of reach of children. Store Xenical at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
