Diazepam is used to treat anxiety, acute alcohol withdrawal and seizures. Diazepam is also used to relieve muscle spasms and to provide sedation before medical procedures. Diazepam belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines which act on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a calming effect. Diazepam works by enhancing the effects of a certain natural chemical in the body (GABA).Take diazepam by mouth as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Use diazepam exactly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because diazepam can be habit-forming.
For the treatment of anxiety disorder, the usual adult diazepam dosage, depending upon severity of symptoms, is 2 to 10 mg 2 to 4 times daily.
For the treatment of muscle spasms, the usual adult dosage, depending upon severity of symptoms, is 2 to 10 mg 2 to 4 times daily.
For acute alcohol withdrawal, the usual adult dosage, depending upon severity of symptoms, is 10 mg 3 to 4 times during the first 24 hours, then 5 mg 3 or 4 times daily as needed.
If diazepam is used for an extended period of time or for seizure control, do not suddenly stop using diazepam without your doctor's approval.
Before using diazepam, tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: liver disease, kidney disease, lung/breathing problems, drug or alcohol abuse, any allergies.
