Common uses

Codeine phosphate, obtained from opium or prepared from morphine by methylation, is a centrally acting analgesic used for the relief of mild to moderately severe pain.

Codeine is used as an analgesic, a cough suppressant or as an anti-diarrheal agent. The phosphate of the alkaloid codeine is used because of its free solubility in water.

Aspirin is a salicylate that has demonstrated antiinflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and antirheumatic activity.

Aspirin is used for the temporary relief of headache, painful discomfort and fever of colds, muscular aches and pains, temporary relief of minor pains of arthritis, toothache, and pain following dental procedures, menstrual pain.

The combination of codeine and aspirin is used to relieve mild to moderately severe pain.

Codeine/aspirin is sometimes prescribed for other uses, ask your doctor for more information.

Directions

The combination of aspirin and codeine comes as an effervescent tablet, 10/500 mg, usually taken every four hours or as needed.

Codeine can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose, more often, or for a longer period than your doctor tells you to.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered if it is within an hour or so. If you do not remember until later, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Precautions

Before taking aspirin and codeine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to aspirin, codeine, sulfite, or any other drugs.

Tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially other pain relievers, anticoagulants, antidepressants, corticosteroids, MAO inhibitors, medications for cough, cold, or allergies, medications for diabetes, arthritis, or gout, sedatives, sleeping pills, tranquilizers and vitamins.

Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had a bleeding disorder, ulcer disease, liver or kidney disease, a history of alcoholism, anemia, lung or thyroid disease, prostatic hypertrophy, or urinary problems.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking aspirin and codeine, call your doctor.

If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking aspirin and codeine.

Codeine may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how codeine affects you.

Alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by codeine.

Possible side effects

Although side effects from aspirin and codeine are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, upset stomach, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, difficulty urinating.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: difficulty breathing, rash or itching, ringing in the ears or decreased hearing, abnormal bruising or bleeding.

Overdose

If overdose of codeine with aspirin is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Additional information

Keep codeine with aspirin in a tightly closed container and out of reach of children. Store codeine with aspirin at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).

Scientific studies support treatment with aspirin for heart attacks, strokes, and some related conditions, in both men and women.

Dolmen contains, in addition to the 10 mg. codeine and 500 mg. aspirin, also 250 mg. vitamin C.
